After several raised beds were built in April 2022 and planted with different plants (strawberries, barley, potatoes ...) at WWTP Brunswick, we are now in the harvest season. Why do we do this?

In contrast to the usual irrigation with rainwater or drinking water, our plants are watered only with WWTP effluent that has been additionally treated by a combination of ozonation, filtration and UV disinfection.

By analysing several plant parts (fruit, leaf, root) at the BfG, we’ll check if and how much of the substances that may still be present in the water (e.g. pharmaceuticals) are absorbed into the plants. The results are a part of the chemical risk assessment within the overall risk management.
